If you teach poetry, then you know kids go into it thinking they hate it. That is because they are usually confused and feel like they can't meet the expectations to decipher what poets mean.
This is not the point of poetry!
Your students should approach poetry the way they approach listening to music. Their job is just to appreciate it and get an overall feel for it, and hopefully to recognize a few things that make it a poem and not a paragraph.
This "Examine a Poem" is a quick instruction sheet when reading a new poem. It is very open ended, but guides kids quickly to get an overall feel, and thus an appreciation, for any poem. I know it will help!
