This free “It Says/I Say” chart will be of great use to you.  It is something that I use constantly because it requires kids to not only report facts in their own words but to respond with something thoughtful.  This way,

You'll immediately know if they are (or are not) comprehending texts and videos.  Because it’s not too long, it is manageable without being tedious.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Use when kids are watching a video or reading a nonfiction text for research.  
  • Use for any video when you want kids to focus a bit.
  • Use as an activity for regular reading assignments, such as current events.
