Theme is one of the most important lessons we can teach.  Theme is the heart of the story; it’s the lesson the author wants us to learn.  And it’s not stated in the text; we have to glean it from what we are reading.

Lessons that require kids to do this type of thinking are difficult.  I have found that giving kids a list of possible themes has been incredibly helpful.
